This category focuses  on the most critically and commercially adjudged artiste in the year under review (January 2018 – June 2019). Overall most successful artiste in the year under review.                                                                                                                  

However  “non-voting” category, for  anyone who emerges as the winner would most definitely be seen as a product of grace and hard work because the academy would judge the nominated artists according to their musical outreach, global recognition, commercial success like the album/singles sales, streams and YouTube views are essential the popularity and ground the nominated artists in this category must have blown the minds of audience both in nigeria international in the music industry.                                                                                                                                               

Also this category is beneficial not just to the winner but also those nominated because the category means global recognition of the artist’s which makes them acceptable for various brands, national and international company endorsements deals because the event which is organized by Mr Ayo Animashaun’a Smooth Promotion an entertainment firm that organizes The Headies award and publishes the weekly Hip Hop World Magazine and owners of HipTv a cable station.


Burna Boy

With the release of his ‘’Outside’’ album in January 2018. The album had early hit rcords like ‘Heaven’s Gate’ after that ‘Ye’ turned out to become the one song that would define Burna Boy’s recognition and success in the year 2018. When videos started surfacing of Burna Boy performing ‘Ye’ during his ‘Life On The Outside’ tour of the United States, the online community went hype with the way the fans reacted to the song. Subsequently, ‘ye’ continued to grow into a hashtag and then a movement. Coincidentally America’s multiple Grammy award winner Kanye West named his album “ye”. Afterwards, it has been killer features and more hits in ‘Gbona’ and ‘On The Low’ from the artist who has somehow become focused, re-energized and attractive. He recently dropped his 2019 album titled “African Giant” and he performed one of its singles on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show in the United States of America. Wizkid: In 2018 the Starboy has ripped up stages worldwide, dropping banging records, sealing lucrative deals, walking on runways and consistently becoming a trending topic all through 2018.In May 2018, Wizkid sold out the 20,000 O2 Arena in one of his most iconic feats, while also performing at the Reading Festival, UK. His influence this year spread outside the music circles, as he also affected immensely on Pop culture, from walking the Dolce and Gabbana Runway alongside top model, Naomi Campbell to hanging out with Diddy at his US home, featuring as one of the ambassadors for the Super Eagles World Cup jersey branded by Nike, having an official ‘Wizkid Day’ declared in his honour by the US Minnesota and many more. His hits in 2018 include, ‘Soco’, ‘Fake Love’, ‘Fever’, ‘Gucci Snake’ and ‘Bad Energy’ with Skepta. With these achievements falling under the year in review for this category he’s a top possible recipient of the award.

Davido turned his label DMW into a force to be reckoned with through their collaborative hits like ‘Mind’ and ‘Aje’ his artist mayorkun won the Headies Next Rated award in 2018, also Davido won the award for ‘Best African Act’ at the 2018 BET, becoming the first artist in the category to be presented with his plaque on stage. Being a globally recognized and revered  African Musical Heavyweight winning the award might be a high probability.

Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage: Also Known as Mama ‘Jam Jam’ enjoyed a spectacular 2018. While her relationship with Wizkid was one that kept the blogs busy, she was relentless with her music as her contributions through songs like ‘Tiwa’s Vibe’, ‘Lova Lova’, ‘Diet’ and ‘Get It Now’ remix with Omarion were unrivaled. Tiwa headlined her début UK show at the Indigo at the O2 Arena before a sold-out audience and won the award for the ‘Best African Act’ at the MTV EMAs in November ahead of a strong list of contenders including Davido, which is no small means. She then shared the stage with Beyonce and Jay Z at the Global Citizen Festival in South Africa. With the power and popularity she and her craft has gained it won’t be shocking if mama Jay is announced as the winner of this category.

Falz: His path from been a rapper, singer, actor and Host/VJ of ‘ MTV Base Bigger Friday Show’ to mainstream domination was enhanced in 2018 when he released the video for his hit single ‘This is Nigeria’  delivering one of the moments that shaped pop culture the most in 2018. The song described as the ‘state of the nation address’ created a buzz around his name like never, with the video hitting over 1 million views in 72 hours various religious organisations threatening the lawyer with lawsuits if he doesn’t take the video down. He will also be remembered for his insightful interviews with the program ‘On The Couch’ alongside co-host Laila in 2018. The impressive rollout leading to the release of his ‘Sweet Boy’ record and to top things off, he bagged another AMVCA award to buttress how prolific his career has been.
